The direct method
Journaling
Class content’s title: The direct method.
(I)
What the Author Says
· The direct method began in the ninteenth century.
Influency by Humboldt who said: “the notion that a language cannot be taught,
that one can only create conditions for learning to take place” (Kelly 1969).
So teachers that used this method could not speak in their mother tongue, only
it was allowed to use the target language, use of flash card to clarify
meaning, the readings were more for pleasure and not for analyzed the grammar
structures.
(II)
What I Thought
· Direct method had begun to provide a
competitive alternative to grammatical translation, emphasizing the capacity to
use a language rather than analyze it.
The
teacher does not need to know the main language of the students.
(III) Notes I took
during discussions in class:
The Direct Method
deliberately prioritises listening and speaking skills.
Language is seen as a
route to communication and students will therefore do a lot of talking,
gesturing, acting and interacting in Direct Method lessons.
The Direct Method
deliberately prioritises listening and speaking skills.
(IV) Journal
Entry—Post-reading/discussion reflections—reflections on the three items above:
(I) What the author says, (II) What I thought, and (III) Notes I took during
discussions in class:
· I
understand that the direct method it is a teaching method in favor of concrete
observation and practical experience.
· Direct
method is a teaching method that directly establishing an association between experience
and expressions, words and phrases, observing and understanding.
During class I thought about how the brain has the ability to store information, and make the relationship with an image so that its identification is easier.
